  • Textbook: Sears and Zemansky's University Physics with Modern Physics, 13th or 14th Edition, Young & Freedman. The publisher is PEARSON. Available at the NJIT Bookstore. If you purchase elsewhere, ISBN-13: 978-0321675460 is recommended (link to Amazon).
  • Homework: Homework assignments will be posted on-line at www.masteringphysics.com. You will need a student access code, which comes with the textbook if you purchase from NJIT bookstore. If you purchase elsewhere, make sure that you also get an access code (which may or may not come with your textbook; if not, it can be purchased separately). Please refer to this webpage for information on access to MasteringPhysics (include purchasing an access code). Use this course name: MPCHENFALL18 to access homework assignments for this section.
  • In-class quizzes and iClicker: We use iClicker for in-class quizzes, which counts into the final grade. Please purchase or rent an iClicker 2 student remote (NJIT Bookstore link) and bring it to every class (starting from the 2nd week). You need to register your iClicker device so I would know who the device belongs to. To do so, refer to this link for detailed information. You will be firstly prompted with two questions, select "iClicker Classic" and "My institution does not use an LMS" as the answers. Then you will be brought into another page to register your device on their webpage. Provide the information as necessary, and make sure to use your 8-digit student ID and the remote ID on the back of your iClicker remote.
  • Exams: Three common exams will be given during the semester. Final exam will be given at the end of the semester. Schedule below:
    • Common Exam 1 (exam info; review sessions; example test): Monday, Oct 08 4:15 – 5:45 PM KUPF 107

From the Syllabus: Course Policies

Attendance

It is expected that students will attend all lectures and recitations. Attendance will be taken at all classes and exams. More than 3 unexcused absences (in total) are excessive. If you have excusable absences, contact your instructor or the Dean of Students. If you must withdraw from the course, do it officially through the Registrar. Do not simply stop attending and taking exams: that forces the instructor to assign you a course grade of F. We require that cell phones and laptops be off during classes and exams.

Grading

Your final letter grade will be based on a composite score for the term that includes the following:
  1. Common Exams: Three common exams will be given during the semester (see above in "Announcements" for schedule and room assignment).
  2. Final Exam: A comprehensive examination of the entire semester's work will be given at the end of the semester, during December 15 - 21.
  3. Lecture Quizzes: Short quizzes covering the preceding week's work will usually be given during each lecture. The grades count toward your final course grade . There will be no make-up quizzes.
  4. Homework: All the homework is distributed and graded online at www.masteringphysics.com with the course id: MPCHENFALL18. Be sure that your textbook copy has a Mastering Physics student access code card, which you need for the homework assignments. Homework due dates are posted at the MasteringPhysics course site. Late homework receives no credit. The recommended problems from the text (see syllabus) will be discussed during the recitation class.

(From the Syllabus) Policy on missed quizzes and exams: There are no make-ups for in class activities. Students missing an I-Clicker question or other quiz will receive a grade of zero for that item. The general policy is that students who miss a common exam will receive a score of zero for that Exam. That score will be included in the calculation of your final grade. Students that miss two common exams automatically fail the course. Students who anticipate an absence from a common exam should discuss their situation with their instructor PRIOR TO their absence. In order to be qualified to receive a "make-up" common exam score (a very rare occurrence), the student should present documentation for not being able to take the test as scheduled. As is the standard policy of NJIT, this documentation should be presented to the student’s Physics 111 instructor AND to the Dean of Students - (973) 596- 3466, Room 255 Campus Center. BOTH the Physics 111 instructor and Dean of Students must concur in permitting a "make-up" common exam. Students who miss common exams that do not present documentation within 7 days of the common exam will receive a score of zero for the common exam. In the event that the above qualification is met, a separate make-up test for the missed common quiz will not be offered. Instead, the portion of the final exam relevant to the contents of the missed test will be considered for giving a grade for the missed test. The instructor will evaluate the final exam questions from those chapters and normalize this portion of the student's grade for the missed common quiz.

Here are the approximate weights to be used for calculating the final grade and the final grade scale:

48% for all three common exams (16% each) >85% A
32% for the final exam >80% - 85% B+
10% for the total homework grade >70% - 80% B
10% for the total lecture quiz grade >65% - 70% C+
>55% - 65% C
>50% - 55% D
less than 50% F
Grades are not negotiable. A score of 85.00% is a B+, not an A

Honor Code

The NJIT Student Senate has requested a zero-tolerance policy for cheating of any kind and for student behavior that disrupts learning. The Senate wants fairness for all students. The Dean of Students determines punishments and requires professors to report any incidents.Violations will be reported to the Dean of Students. The penalties range from a minimum of failure in the course plus disciplinary probation up to expulsion from NJIT. Avoid situations where your own behavior could be misinterpreted as dishonorable. Students are required to agree to the NJIT Honor Code on each exam, assignment, quiz, etc. for the course. Turn off all cellular phones, wireless devices, computers, and messaging devices of all kinds during classes and exams. Please do not eat, drink, or create noise in class that interferes with the work of other students or instructors. Creating noise or otherwise interfering with the work of the class will not be tolerated.
